New baby calf!

So much for sleeping in late this morning! S came in from the back porch at 0800 and woke me up from a perfectly good dream to say, "I think Little Darlin is giving birth." Sure enough, she was right. Darlin was laying at the far end of paddock #2, assuming the position. The zoom capability of my camera is not that great.

S's midwife training kicked in, and she went out to see if her new Momma needed any assistance. She was worried that the calf hadn't turned properly.

Darlin eventually moved closer to the house (and shade), and soon presented us with a little red bull calf at 0926 - exactly one day earlier than the anniversary of her first calf born last August 5th. K8 and I both verified he is male.

Darlin is such a good Momma licking her calf clean.

Her udder has been this swollen with milk for quite a while now. We all thought she would calf last week.

These pictures were taken within 15 minutes of birth.

It took him a while to get his feet under him.

We are going to call him "T-Bone".

He will be castrated with the banding method in a month.

And then he will have over 24 months of getting fat on fresh grass and water on the Wanch before going into the freezer. Our heifer Sandie came over to check out her new half brother.
