Hard labor

K8 getting ready for a day of hard work today, Friday 9 November. He and the dogs would have been content to lay here all day, but it wasn't to be.

I had asked my friend John to cut up a long straight red oak that has been down for a few years. I helped K8 roll 27 rounds down to the road where K7 and two other Scouts were splitting and loading more fire wood that they had pre-sold, and had to deliver by sunset today.

Every one had a job and they worked well as a team.

They were motivated because they were working for money.

K7 and K8 would move the rounds from the ditch to the road, then go back to their other jobs.

K7 carried the split wood to the truck, and K8 stacked it. It took about 1 1/2 hours for them to get it done, after which we had a late lunch - K8 made everyone peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, followed by tuna fish sandwiches. Then we delivered our first truck load.

Here they are unloading their second truckload of wood into a basement furnace room. They were paid $120 for a cord of oak fire wood, which came out to be $30 per boy (or $6 an hour). Not bad since all of them live on farms and would have been working the past 5 hours for free at home. They have a few other customers lined up, so they will be doing this again real soon.
