Tuesday site-seeing Edinburgh

Our starting neighborhood
n
Back to the castle without the gale force wind of Monday afternoon. Good work-out hiking up the roads and steps to the top.

A little sunshine, a little rain.

The view from Carlton Hill on the east side of Edinburgh looking back to the west and the Castle.

Crash! I asked KT to stop on the wide (really wide) sidewalk along the "main drag", Prince's Street, so I could get the Walter Scott monument in background. She stopped on a dime, and the old(er) lady walking behind her thought it a crime... There was plenty of room for her to pass on either side, but I guess she was  taking advantage of the little shade that KT was creating?

The Castle from Prince's Street looking south across a long, wide sunken garden area.

We rested in the garden after eating lunch, just soaking up the brief sunshine and peace and quiet - you can barely hear the traffic noise beyond the trees on the right.

View from Carlton Hill looking north toward the Forth of Fife to the left and the North Sea off to the right. You can see a rain squall coming from the left. It hit us about 15 minutes later. This northern part of Edinburgh is the New Town filled with Georgian style buildings.

Aaah, the rain has arrived...again.

During the rain, we moved to the south side of Carlton Hill. The pointed hill in the background is Arthur's Seat, an ancient and extinct volcano. No, we did not feel a need to climb it. Notice the interesting collection of buildings - an old church with orderly yards. Behind it, the group of buildings painted in brightly contrasting colors, and off to the left, what looks like a replica of the Sydney, Australia music concert hall. It is actually an Earth museum.

  1. I love the pictures! Maybe that old lady was one of those old women who has a steeling problem and was going to pick-pocket KT. It's just a thought really. Why would she be walking so close?
Again, beautiful place Edinburgh is. How lovely to be there at this time.

  2. We had a great week of weather in Edinburgh, which changed to rain storms right after we departed. Apparently the rain followed us south because Aunt M said the rain was lashing down at 0400 this morning. I wouldn't know because I slept like a babe throughout the night. Not raining at the moment, so its off to Copper Kettle for breakfast.
