Ducks and chain saws...

We have a lot of ducks, so the question is, how many should we keep vs how many should we eat? The white pipe you see sticking up out of the ground in front of the tree is our old well. It is only about 100 feet deep, so we are going to put a hand pump on it for emergencies - like when the electric power goes off in a storm and the big deep well in the front yard with the electric pump conks out.

No, we did not use a chain saw on the ducks, but K2 trained K7 on how to use the big chain saw today by cutting up all the big branches that Dan has been cutting off the dead oak tree. K2 showed him how to use it, put it in his hands, and stood back and supervised, giving occasional pointers.

After a few hours, K2 was satisfied with K7's skill. I will now have to ask K2 to build a 3rd rack along the back fence to store all this new fire wood.

No decision on the ducks yet. We have to wait and see how many drakes (males) we have in this batch. The males will have a solid green head with a white band around the neck - gorgeous looking.

The boys are about finished trimming off the branches, so now I need to invite our "mountain man" lumberjack friend John over to supervise dropping the tree. Eventually we will need to pull the stump out and level the back yard so we can put a layer of topsoil and grass seed down and have a real back yard. Yea! I am already pondering what kind of tree I can plant to hide the propane gas tank - maybe a weeping willow? Maybe an evergreen like a Norway spruce? Maybe another tree that will grow into a giant shade tree? Any ideas from our faithful followers?

  1. If there were a draught a willow would not do well in the back yard. An evergreen would be nice during the cold months and seems to grow naturally in that area. I always like the leaves on Sycamore trees.
